Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all! What a year it has been for Cedars Point Kennel. While it wasn’t as busy as 2023, it kept us on our toes with new adventures.
Yetta was bred to Cedar for our “G” litter in early spring. Puppies were scheduled to arrive on our wedding anniversary date of May 27th. Yetta’s past litters have always been uneventful especially with the whelp so we assumed she’d have no issues with her litter this time around. An X-ray showed at least 9 pups and we had everything prepared for the G litter’s arrival. On the morning of May 25th, Yetta’s temperature dropped below 99.9. This is an indicator that puppies will normally arrive within the next 24 hours. We kept her comfortable and waited for signs of active labor. We spent the entire day monitoring her but she never began active labor with contractions. We had a long night taking turns watching her and as the clock ticked on into the morning of May 26th we knew something was wrong as this was not typical. Later in the day, Jeff noticed green discharge from Yetta symbolizing that indeed something was wrong. We immediately drove her to pet emergency where she was quickly assessed and taken in for an emergency c-section. Turns out a pup was stuck, preventing active labor. We decided to wait the time out by going to an evening Mass at the Cathedral, praying that everything would be ok. Prayers were answered when the vet informed us all 9 puppies and Yetta were healthy although they were to spend the night at pet emergency for observation. We both got a good night’s sleep and the following morning on May 27th went to pick up Yetta and the pups. The vet tech who brought the pups out were in a Frito Lays Bold Mix box which seemed fitting under the circumstances. We decided we’d name the G Litter after Frito Lay products as a result. It was the best anniversary present ever.
The pups grew up fast showing great promise. Before we knew it they all headed for their new homes. We decided to keep a pup from this litter to groom for a potential breeder. Her kennel name is Cedars Point Glitzy Spitz (after the Frito Lay’s sunflower seeds). She and Zephyr have become fast friends terrorizing anything or anyone who gets in their way. Glitzy is smart like her parents, beautiful, and inherited Yetta’s habit for running around with a bone in her mouth. Jeff has already taken her hunting and she has phenomenal natural instincts. He has already begun conditioning her for her Natural Ability test in late Spring.
On the home front, Jeff is focusing on the kennel full time. He’s spent a good part of the hunting season traveling throughout eastern Montana and Wyoming chasing Hungarian Partridge and chukar along with pheasants, roughed grouse and sharp tail. He’s hunted some tough terrain with the dogs but has been extremely successful at bringing home new quarry. He is looking forward to hunting quail in California and Arizona at the start of the new year.
Brenda moved to 5th grade this year after teaching 4th. It’s a new challenge but is teaching literacy and science which she loves. Brenda teaches 3 sections of 5th grade and enjoys working with all of the kids. She’s excited to teach a unit on Space and on the Great Lakes which she
knows lots about having grown up in Wisconsin. She once again raised honey bees at school and bottled 110 jars of honey with her students.
Our plan for 2025 is to breed Yetta, Aster, and Soda. Yetta just started her heat cycle and Jeff plans to head to California after Christmas to breed her with an approved stud from the Czech Republic named Alex. He plans to make trips to Minnesota and Wisconsin once Soda and Aster come in.
We look forward to more puppy adventures in 2025. Stay tuned!
Have a wonderful Christmas and New Year!
Many blessings,
Jeff, Brenda, Cedar, Yetta, Aster, Soda, Zephyr, and Glitzy
